Indian Passport rises by 3 ranks to 80th spot in 2024 Henley Passport Index

Henley & Partners have just released their 2024 Passport Rankings and India's passport ranks 80th in the in the list in 2024, a rise by 3 ranks since last year. At 80th rank, citizens of India can travel to 62 countries without a visa, including popular tourist destinations like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

UK India announce Defense Cooperation

This week UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps welcomed Republic of India’s Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh in the UK to boost UK-India defense cooperation, the first visit to the UK by an Indian Defense Minister in more than 20 years.

India has topped the list of remittance recipient countries in the world, with a total of $125 billion sent by Indians living in different parts of the world to their families in India. 

Indian student faces charge of murdering three family members in US

A 23-year-old Indian student was arrested on charges of allegedly killing his grandparents and uncle inside a condominium in New Jersey, said police and US media reports. 

The student, identified as Om Brahmbhatt, was accused of shooting Dilipkumar Brahmbhatt (72), Bindu Brahmbhatt (72), and Yashkumar Brahmbhatt (38), said the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and the South Plainfield Police Department in a statement.

New York City Officially Declares Diwali a Public School Holiday

Diwali is officially a New York City public school holiday, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday.

Adams was joined at the announcement at City Hall by Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Hindu American and first South Asian American woman elected to state office.

"Today we say to over 600,000 Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain Americans, we see you," Rajkumar said. "Today we say to families from India, Guyana, Trinidad, Nepal, and Bangladesh, we recognize you."

 

The Vibrant Tamil Diaspora in Paris

Finding root in its colonial history, Paris is home to large and varied immigrant communities. While Morrocan Cous Cous and cream laden north Indian food has become a daily part of the everyday French life, it is not popular knowledge to many that the street known as Little Jaffna in the tenth arrondissement of Paris, is home to a thriving Tamil community. As is the case with most diasporic communities, they hold on to their culture tighter than those back in the motherland.
