Indian American Darshana Patel wins Democratic nomination in California’s North County

Indian American research scientist Darshana Patel, 49, has won the Democratic nomination for California's Assembly District 76, with Kristie Bruce-Lane securing the Republican nomination for the same constituency, defeating Joseph C. Rocha. Both contenders are set to vie for the seat soon to be vacated by the termed-out Brian Maienschein in the California State Assembly.

The North County seat, presently occupied by Brian Maienschein, will become available after 2024 due to term limits.

Indian-Origin Mauritians of 7th generation now eligible for OCI Card

In a significant diplomatic move, President Hon'ble Droupadi Murmu, during her recent state visit to Mauritius for the country's National Day celebrations, announced the extension of eligibility for the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card to Indian-origin Mauritians up to the seventh generation.

The 96th Oscar Academy Awards ceremony took place on March 10, 2024, held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The event was presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), and Raj Kapoor, a prominent member of the Indian diaspora was one of the producers of the ceremony, which was televised in the United States by ABC. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show for the fourth time, following the 89th ceremony in 2017, the 90th ceremony in 2018, and the 95th ceremony in 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ministry of Tourism India has launched the “Chalo India” campaign along with the global Indian diaspora to involve overseas Indians in promoting tourism in the country along with inaugurating a series of tourism-related projects in India.

Based on the “Chalo India” campaign, Prime Minister Modi urges the Indian diaspora members to become ambassadors of India and encourage five of their non-Indian friends to travel to India and explore the rich culture and beauty of the country. 

King’s College, London launches scholarships for Indian Students (May 31st Deadline)

King’s College, London has recently launched a scholarship programme, designed exclusively for Indian students that enables them a grant of 10,000 pounds against the college fees as a fee waiver. The Vice Chancellor’s award will be awarded to 30 Indian students starting this year and is applicable across six faculties in the university. The scholarship is for students starting full-time, on-campus postgraduate study in September 2024.
