The unfortunate string of incidents of attack on NRIs in USA continues with the case of Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi dancer from Kolkata, Amarnath Ghosh, shot dead in USA on Feb 27 this week. This year has seen a tragic rise in number of Indians killed in USA, as reported by us earlier (click here for the story).

Popular television actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee, who is known for her role as Gopi Bahu in 'Saath Nibhaana Saathiya', disclosed the news on X (Twitter). According to Bhattacharjee, Amarnath Ghosh was killed in St Louis, Missouri on Tuesday evening. Ghosh's website said he was pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Dance at Washington University in Saint Louis.

Bhattacharjee requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs minister S Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in the US to get the details of reasons behind the murder. Ghosh’s friends are not able to claim his body.

The dancer was taking an evening walk when he was shot multiple times by an unidentified assailant, said Bhattacharjee.

She sought help from the Indian embassy in the US, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying friends of Ghosh tried to claim his body but there had been no update on it.

The actor shared that Amarnath Ghosh was the only child in his family. His mother died three years ago and his father died when he was a child, she added.

Mr. Ghosh was pursuing his PhD. in USA at Washington University in St. Louis. According to the university website, “Amarnath Ghosh was interested in exploring his diverse ethnic background, race and the diverse unity of various cultures through the compositions of Sri Rabindranath Tagore one of the most revolutionary Bengali poets and philosopher of all time. As a native bengali his research focused on bringing out the concept of race and ethnicity through the art of Dance. In his research he was choosing to focus on 6 different compositions of Sri Tagore which emphasize the concept of race and ethnicity through the diverse unification of many aspects from different cultures that Tagore gained through his worldly travels. Through his research Mr. Ghosh’s main aim was to show that through dance even though we are from different diverse backgrounds its exactly that Unites us all as one.”

Earlier, Mr. Ghosh studied dance at the Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai.

The Indian mission in Chicago is following up on the forensic investigation into the killing of a well-known Indian Kuchipudi dancer in the United States earlier this week. A statement in this regard came after Amarnath Ghosh, the dancer, was found shot to death in St. Louis.

“Deep condolences to family & friends of deceased Amarnath Ghosh in StLouis, Missouri. We are following up forensic, investigation with police & providing support,” the Indian Consulate in Chicago posted on social media platform X.
